Dogs are very popular pets. Even if you don’t have a dog at home, you probably know someone who does.

And it’s not surprising: according to a new survey shared by the website Dogster, the global dog population is estimated at 900 million! And that’s just an estimate because, in certain countries, many of the pet dogs are not registered.

In France alone, there are approximately 8.8 million pet dogs. Italy and Poland each have about 7.5 million pet dogs. In Eastern Europe, Russia has the largest pet dog population, with 12 million.

But it is China that has the largest pet dog population in Asia, with 110 million. Just in Beijing, there are 1 million pet dogs. However, India’s street dog population of 32 million exceeds its pet dog population of 20 million.

Wild dogs make up 75% to 85% of the global canine population, which includes wolves, jackals, foxes, coyotes, and dholes. Of these dogs, about 200 million of them live on the streets and they can be wild, stray, feral, or village dogs.

These dogs belong to the Canidae family and are called canids. Several species of wild dogs are currently threatened with extinction. They can be found today on all continents except Antarctica.

There are currently 197 dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The first breed recognized by the AKC was the Pointer in 1878. Most recently, in 2021, the AKC recognized the Biewer Terrier.
